Starting July 2026, under a new directive issued by the Prime Minister of Vietnam, all gasoline-powered two-wheelerswill be banned from operating within Hanoi’s Ring Road 1 — the city’s dense, historic urban core. By 2030, the restriction zone will be expanded even further.

At first glance, this might seem like a sudden decision. But in reality, it's a calculated move, part of a national roadmap to fully transition to electric transportation by 2050 — a strategy proposed since 2022 that has quickly become a central goal for the country in the decades ahead.
Zooming out to the bigger picture — from pledges at COP28 to large-scale investments in EV infrastructure and local EV manufacturing — Vietnam is showing that it’s done with just talking about going green. Now, it’s actually doing it.
In tandem with crackdowns on counterfeit goods and tighter enforcement of intellectual property rights, the government is sending a clear message:

How Will Everyday People Be Affected?

This policy will undoubtedly disrupt daily life for many people — especially the 7 million Hanoi residents who rely on gasoline bikes once the ban takes effect.
In Vietnam, motorbikes remain the primary mode of transportation for most people. And when gas-powered bikes are no longer allowed, millions will be forced to find alternatives, even if their current bikes still run just fine.
The most common reaction?
“Just get whatever’s cheap, convenient, and works.”
Which means:

How the EV Market Will React
The truth is — we’ve seen this kind of transition before.
Back in 2007, Vietnam made helmet use mandatory on all roads, in an effort to reduce deaths and brain injuries from traffic accidents.
At first, the public pushback was huge:
